Valentine One Shelf and Waterproofing Case

The original shelf, adopted from a Mark Reiss idea has been replaced by a full shelf from Bill Macavan. pictures can be seen in my electronic's article.

This is a view of the shelf with the V1 on it. Looking closely, you can see the "base" of the waterproofing case that the V1 is sitting on. This still applies to the new shelf as well.

A view of the case from the same side. This case has about 30K miles on it and is looking a bit rough but is totally functional.

The Remote Audio would sit underneath but is off to Valentine for RF feedback modification.

Build Instructions

First off, the plastic I use is 3/32". I got it at Lowe's.

The box is 4, 7/8" long X 4" wide outside dimensions and is 1, 5/8" deep (inside measurement).

This allows for the height of the V1 plus the amount that slides over the base.

I made the front end so there are no seams facing forward (in case a seam cracks).

The top is 4, 11/16" X 4"

The front piece is 4" X 1, 23/32"

The two sides are 4, 11/16" X 1, 5/8"

The back is 4" X 1, 5/8"

Assembly should be self-apparent. Glue the top and sides with contact cement. Once it has set up, measure, cut and file the base to fit snuggly. File down the two back corners of the base by 1/8" or whatever feels good. This is primarily for ventilation. Keep the openings small so no moisture can get up there.

Position the base on the shelf or wherever you mount your V1. Keep it close to the right side to facilitate plugging in the cable from the audio adapter. I prefer double-sided tape (thin as possible) to attach the base to the shelf or whatever. Heat the surfaces with a hair dryer before applying the tape so the it will stick for good. Don't over-heat and warp the base.

Once the base is in place, determine the placement of the V1 on the base making sure all edges of the V1 are inside the base. Apply velcro to the V1 and then position in the pre-determined position on the base. Heat the velcro sticky before applying, but again, don't overheat).

Once the V1 is in place, position the case over it slide down over the base. On the right side of the case, eyeball and mark the position of the hole that needs to be drilled to accept the RJ-11 plug from the audio adapter.

BEING VERY CAREFUL, create the hole for the connector. I have one a Roto-Zip that I use. You could probably just buy the bit for plastic and aluminum and use a drill. Support the plastic on the underside as you do this to prevent cracking. You might want to practice your technique on some scrap.

To hold the case in place, get some 3/4" velcro strap (the stuff that sticks to itself) and wrap it around the whole thing. For me, this necessitate cutting a couple of openings in the shelf so I could form a loop.

To mount the V1, put it on the base, put the case over it and then plug in the connector.

To dismount, lift the case on the left, rotating it out of the way to expose the RJ-11 connector so you can unplug it.

Questions? Ask away off-list. If I get several of the same kind I will update these instructions...
